Fashion Knock-Offs: Valentino v. Zara
Tuesday, August 07, 2012
Mainstream fashion chains like Zara, H&M, and Forever21 have left their mark on fashion consumers in part by offering affordable (and slightly-modified) versions of the latest runway designs.
And it looks like Valentino is the latest designer to offer such 'inspiration.' The inspired this time is none other than everyone's favorite high-street outlet, Zara.
Valentino captures ladylike elegance in a way few designers can. And their S/S 2012 collection was no exception. It consisted of beautiful, feminine pieces with just the right amount of structure and linearity to avoid that awkward girly style.

Now imagine my surprise when I came across this dress in Zara's fall inventory (on right):

Striking resemblance, no? Notice the rounded collars, similarly embroidered, white-on-white floral motifs along the breast panels divided by a center line connecting to one at the waist. Not bad for the less-than-$100 price tag! (Click here for the Zara dress.)
